Your car doesn’t start without a “key” ingredient and neither does your body. When you’re about an hour away from your next intense workout, you need something to get you started. Look for a preworkout supplement that provides the specific amino acids and other ingredients that support a great workout. Here are a few you should scan labels to find:
Branched-chain amino acids include three specific aminos: leucine, valine and isoleucine. The benefits of this group are profound, but the primary one is that they bypass the liver on consumption and are much more readily available when the body needs aminos, particularly around workout time. Other benefits include fighting catabolism (muscle breakdown as a result of training, energy needs and other stressors), boosting testosterone and stimulating protein synthesis.
Glycine Propionyl-L-Carnitine is a patented compound that combines the amino acid glycine with a modified form of carnitine that’s attached to a propionate molecule, which helps muscle tissue take up carnitine. Glycine and carnitine help boost nitric-oxide levels. In fact, one study reported that trained male weightlifters who supplemented with GPLC for four weeks had 30 percent higher NO levels after training compared to the same population who were given a placebo.
This amino acid has recently been touted for its ability to boost testosterone levels. The pituitary gland and testicles naturally produce DAA, but taking it supplementally can further boost T count. It works by boosting the body’s release of luteinizing hormone, which stimulates the Leydig cells in testicles (don’t get too excited …) to produce testosterone. D-aspartic acid also boosts energy and focus.
