Coming soon to a road or track near you: a super-high-tech running shoe that can help prevent common jogging injuries like tendinitis and ligament damage. Researchers collaborating on the European based RunSafer project (runsafer.eu) have developed a prototype of a shoe that will send the runner immediate injury-preventing suggestions — for example, roll off the foot differently, find a softer running surface or simply slow down — via a smartphone app. The cutting-edge technology will be able to monitor foot-strike position, side-to-side weight imbalances and even physical exhaustion, among other conditions. Spanish manufacturer New Millennium Sports SL plans to begin selling the shoe to consumers in 2015. Until then, tread lightly on your long-distance running program.
