If you aren’t taking a multivitamin, consider doing so. Besides the health benefits, it may help reduce body fat and bodyweight, according to a clinical trial of obese Chinese women published in the International Journal of Obesity.
Eighty-seven obese women between the ages of 18 and 55 completed the 26-week study. The participants were randomly assigned to one of three groups: One received a multivitamin and mineral supplement; the second received a HYPERLINK "http://www.nutraingredients-usa.com/content/search?SearchText=calcium&FromNews" calcium supplement (162 milligrams per day); and the third received a placebo. The Chinese researchers report that the multivitamin and mineral group lost an average of 7.9 pounds of bodyweight, compared to 1.9 pounds and 0.44 pounds for the calcium and placebo groups, respectively. In addition, significant reductions in body mass index and waist circumference were observed in the multivitamin and mineral group, while the changes in the other groups were not significant.
