We all know that exercise is critical to creating and maintaining a healthy body. But it does have a dark side. Working out increases the amount of tissue-damaging free radicals that are produced by the body. Fortunately, all the antioxidants you’re getting from food and through your supplement regimen neutralize those free radicals, but now research shows another unlikely hero in the fight. The same omega-3 fatty acids you’re getting from fish-oil supplements have recently been shown by researchers at the University of Western Australia to reduce markers of oxidative stress (the result of having too many free radicals in the body) by 20 percent. That’s good news for everything from cardiac health to muscle recovery — both of which can be impaired by those pesky radicals.
