Amanda Latona is one of the most photographed and most followed women in fitness. In just a few years as an IFBB Bikini pro, she has won more shows than most will ever compete in and has graced the covers of several of the industry’s top fitness magazines. The effervescent brunette has amassed nearly 50,000 followers on Twitter and more than 100,000 on Facebook. But her career could have taken a much different arc. Lucky for us, one inspirational visit to a gym changed all that.
Latona was on the path to pop stardom, singing in a four-member all-girl group in which Britney Spears was the original fifth member (seriously). Innosense, which was managed by Justin Timberlake’s mom (seriously), toured in Europe, opening up for ‘N Sync and the Backstreet Boys. This paved the way to a solo contract, inked by music industry icon Clive Davis (seriously). During some downtime early in her solo career, Latona hit the gym, and it changed her life.
“I stepped foot in the gym at 18, saw a woman with a six-pack and said, ‘I wanna look like that,’” she recalls. “I fell in love with the gym and the fitness lifestyle. God gives us our passions, so I found mine then.”
She may not be blazing her way up the Top 40 charts, but happily, Latona’s hard-earned physique sings to us in different ways.
You’re known for being very outgoing and laid back. Where do you get that sense of joy from?
Nehemiah 8:10 says, “The joy of the Lord is my strength.” God is my everything, and when He’s with you, your joy comes from within. I stay in a constant attitude of gratitude. I am blessed to do what I love, and I stay grateful.
Break it down to the basics for us: What type of nutrition does it really take to earn a bikini-ready body?
The strict kind. I am very big on clean eating, but I also preach balance, which took me years to get right. Diet is huge, so I keep sugar out of my diet and get lots of protein and veggies and healthy fats. Always watch calories in versus calories out and eat what God put on this earth — whole foods, not processed ones!
How do supplements fit into your contest or photo-shoot prep?
