Having a great workout starts before you even hit the gym. By including the following products in your preworkout regimen, you’ll improve all facets of your workouts, from growth and strength to energy and endurance.

Beta-Alanine: Taking this amino acid in the 30-minute window before you train helps increase muscular strength and endurance during that workout. That’s because beta-alanine combines with histidine, another amino, to form carnosine, which helps muscles contract with greater force for longer. Ultimately, this stimulates muscle growth.

Citrulline: Citrulline is an amino acid that helps boost energy levels by reducing buildup of ammonia, a toxic compound that can accumulate during workouts, when the body metabolizes large amounts of amino acids. In addition, citrulline increases nitric-oxide levels, helping to further increase energy, improve strength and enhance muscle pump.

Rhodiola: This root extract boosts your body’s capacity for exercise and helps promote recovery. Adaptogens like Rhodiola help the body resist different types of stress, including that which results from exercise. Rhodiola helps increase endurance during workouts because it helps increase ATP production, which increases the amount of oxygen in the blood. Look for products with at least 30 milligrams of Rhodiola, and take it in the hour or so before you hit the gym.
