The media loves to scare the American public, and they’ve done a downright good job with their recent reports about vitamin D. Here are a few facts about this crucial vitamin: D is essential for improving bone health, reducing cancer risk and increasing longevity. “The nominal risks that recent studies have indicated for vitamin D supplementation are far exceeded by the supplemental benefits of this valuable nutrient,” says Luke Bucci, Ph.D., vice president of research for Schiff. Bucci points out that the very conservative Institute of Medicine recently raised its recommendation for how much vitamin D you should take each day — through diet or supplementation — to 600 IU.
