Step away from the Wheaties; there’s a new superstar cereal in town. Reach for oat bran if you want to exercise longer. At least, that’s what a study published in the November 2010 issue of the Journal of the International Society of Sport Nutrition suggests.
Brazilian researchers evaluated oat-bran supplementation on time to exhaustion and glycogen stores in rats. The group that was fed oat bran swam for 20 percent longer before reaching complete muscle fatigue than the rats that didn’t eat oat bran. In addition, the oat-bran group had 67 percent more glycogen in their muscles.
What could this mean for you? The researchers concluded that consuming oat bran helps increase muscle glycogen levels, which may improve endurance, while oat-bran can lower post-exercise inflammation, which hampers recovery. Not bad for switching up breakfast cereals.
