Note to all women out there: People don’t like it when you say things like, “I’m so fat!” Research proves it. A University of Notre Dame study found that women who engaged in such “fat talk” were less liked by their peers than those who spared listeners the self-disparaging comments.
College-aged women were shown photos of noticeably overweight and noticeably skinny women talking about their bodies in either a positive or negative (“fat talk”) manner. Those who talked negatively were rated the least likable, whether they were overweight or not. The most liked individuals in the study were overweight women who talked positively about their bodies. Of course, if you’re in shape, you may not want to go around bragging about it to everyone — arrogance won’t win you many friends either.
