When you leave the gym, you may think that you’ve completed the most important aspect of building muscle — your workout. But your postworkout supplement regimen may be equally important, providing the raw materials and nutrients you need to achieve maximal recovery and growth. Consider adding the following three supplements to your postworkout shake.
Creatine Monohydrate: This molecule, made from three amino acids, not only fuels workouts but also helps you recover afterward. Creatine pulls more water into muscle cells before, during and after workouts. Doing so afterward also brings more nutrients into your muscles, helping them recover. This also stretches muscle cells, encouraging them to grow larger to accommodate this demand.
Glutamine: This most prevalent amino in the human body is critical at many times of the day, particularly right after you finish training. Your body needs glutamine to replenish depleted stores and to help with recovery. In addition, it can readily be converted into many other aminos that your body needs for recovery.
HMB: A metabolite of the branched-chain amino acid leucine, beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate helps encourage muscle growth mainly by decreasing muscle breakdown. Although HMB was once thought only to work in beginning lifters, new research shows that as long as the dose is high enough, it is effective for experienced lifters, especially during periods of intense training.
