When you walk into the gym, your mind and body need to be prepped to get the most from your training efforts. Preworkout supplements that stimulate the central nervous system and enhance focus help rev you up mentally. But you also need the fuel that allows your body to perform what your brain wants it to do. Try this combination of brain and brawn boosters to energize yourself before, during and after workouts.

Arginine: One of the keys to great workouts is nitric oxide. NO dilates blood vessels, allowing more blood to flow and deliver crucial things like oxygen, amino acids, glucose, testosterone, growth hormone and water to working muscles. The amino acid arginine readily converts to nitric oxide in the body, so making sure that you have plenty of arginine in your system before workouts is critical.

Beta-alanine: Research has shown that supplementing with this amino acid before workouts helps boost strength and endurance. Beta-alanine combines in the body with another amino acid, histidine, to form carnosine, a small protein molecule that supports strength and endurance.

Taurine: Studies show that having elevated levels of this amino acid increases the strength of muscle fibers. In addition, studies show that taurine also supports endurance, boosting it by as much as 50 percent. A third advantage of this valuable amino is its ability to reduce the oxidative stress and damage that intense exercise causes.

Green-tea extract: Green-tea extract contains epigallocatechin gallate, a compound that significantly increases metabolic rate and releases more fat from fat cells. This not only helps burn more body fat but also provides more fat as a fuel source. These catechins also boost levels of norepinephrine, a brain chemical that revs you up so you feel energized during workouts.
