Flex Your Flaxseed Power

Disease Prevention

Flaxseed may be the next “power food” in health circles, according to University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center researchers, who found that daily consumption may reduce the risk of prostate cancer. “Cancer cells migrate by attaching onto other cells. The omega-3 fatty acids found in flaxseed keep cells from binding together and attaching to blood vessels,” says Wendy Demark-Wahnefried, Ph.D., R.D., professor of behavioral science and lead researcher of the December 2008 Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention study. To reap the health benefits, you can either take a flaxseed supplement or sprinkle a tablespoon of ground flaxseeds or flaxseed oil into your protein shake, yogurt or oatmeal.
