Rice has long been avoided by those on low-carb plans as well as the Paleo diet. Now, Consumer Reports, the Food and Drug Administration and the attorney general for the state of Illinois are providing yet another reason to moderate rice consumption: its uncomfortably high levels of arsenic. Between the three aforementioned sources, each with separate test results released in fall 2012, arsenic was found at levels exceeding safe limits in 60 different products tested by Consumer Reports and 200 by the FDA, including in such foods as rice cereal (both infant and adult varieties), rice milk, rice cakes, and brown and white rice. And while the FDA states that more research is needed to produce conclusive results on the issue, these findings serve as a helpful reminder to keep rice consumption in check for the time being.
