Water is great and all, but during a hard workout, wouldn’t you rather sip on something that can do more than just hydrate you (while also hydrating you, of course)? Heavy training sessions make you lose electrolytes through sweat and cause your body to break down BCAAs to use for energy. You need to replace those electrolytes and keep blood amino acids elevated during training sessions to protect muscle function and eliminate muscle breakdown. This can easily be accomplished by simply adding the following ingredients to your water bottle.

Branched-Chain Amino Acids: The trio of leucine, isoleucine and valine is unbeatable for maximizing protein synthesis in broken-down muscles, which translates to size and strength gains. Of the three, leucine best promotes anabolism but needs the other two aminos present to perform optimally.

Beta-Alanine: This nonessential amino acid combines with the amino acid histidine in the body to form carnosine, which in turn raises carnosine levels in muscle and allows you to train at higher intensity levels for longer. This occurs mainly through carnosine’s ability to buffer skeletal muscle acidity during prolonged high-intensity exercise. Because one of the primary causes of fatigue during heavy training is a drop in muscle acidity, it makes perfect sense that increased intramuscular carnosine levels via beta-alanine supplementation would be beneficial to bodybuilders and strength athletes. 

Electrolytes: When you sweat, electrolytes like sodium, potassium and magnesium are lost. And they need to be replenished if you hope to keep training hard because they’re critical for the muscle contractions and nerve impulse transmissions that keep your body functioning at a high level. Low sodium, for example, can result in muscle cramping and lethargy, which will do you no favors in the middle of a tough workout.
