Making Sports-Nutrition History

In recent years, creatine, with numerous research studies supporting its effectiveness, has been the leading supplement for those looking to improve exercise and muscular performance. However, our understanding of exercise physiology and sports nutrition has evolved exponentially in the years since creatine made its explosive debut into the sports-nutrition world in the early ’90s. Recent research is giving rise to another supplement breakthrough, one that will change the direction of the industry like creatine did so many years ago. Its name is IntraXCell, and it’s the next breakthrough supplement for increasing explosive strength, muscle mass and endurance.

How Does It Work?

IntraXCell’s primary ingredient is beta-alanine, which is responsible for the majority of performance benefits. To understand how beta-alanine works, however, it first helps to understand some of the key limiting factors to increasing strength and mass.

During high-intensity exercise, large amounts of hydrogen ions are released into the body. That flush of hydrogen causes the pH of muscle tissue to become more acidic, which increases fatigue. At the same time, exercise produces free radicals, which further promote fatigue. The end result is that strength plummets, muscles cannot be sufficiently overloaded and therefore they will not grow.

IntraXCell’s research-supported optimal dose of beta-alanine dramatically boosts muscular levels of a hydrogen-ion buffer called carnosine. Because carnosine is found in higher levels in Type II muscle fibers, which are the ones that grow bigger but fatigue faster, increasing carnosine concentrations can greatly enhance those muscles’ ability to absorb the increased amounts of hydrogen ions that are released during exercise. As a result, your muscles can tolerate longer, harder workouts, and you will see correspondingly greater increases in mass and strength.

This isn’t just theory, either. Research conducted using IntraXCell has shown that athletes gain more lean mass while using it. One study, presented at the 2009 International Society of Sports Nutrition Conference and Expo, put subjects on a weight-training program for eight weeks and gave them IntraXCell. On average, they gained 2 pounds of lean body mass, with some subjects gaining as much as 7 pounds.

Bonus Benefits

Beyond stabilizing muscular pH, carnosine acts as an intracellular antioxidant that can fight cellular fatigue. Knowing these secondary benefits of carnosine, Athletic Edge Nutrition added other ingredients that boost yet another powerful intracellular antioxidant called glutathione:

NAC increases cellular levels of glutathione, a powerful antioxidant that fights fatigue. Interestingly, beta-alanine has been shown to increase the synthesis of glutathione by increasing the availability of its precursor cysteine. Beta-alanine and NAC work perfectly together.

Vitamin E

Carnosine and vitamin E operate hand in hand. Taking vitamin E with beta-alanine has been shown to increase carnosine levels more than taking beta-alanine alone, and carnosine has been shown to increase vitamin E’s antioxidant ability.

Alpha-Lipoic Acid

ALA is a highly versatile antioxidant that gives an assist to the other two antioxidants mentioned here.

The End Result

IntraXCell keeps muscles in an optimal pH range by buffering and absorbing hydrogen ions while simultaneously fighting fatigue-causing free radicals. As a result, muscles are able to perform at much higher levels.
