As any great athlete knows, if the rules of the game change, the way the game is played also must change. The same holds true for the sports-nutrition supplements industry, which Daniel Pierce, vice president of brand strategy and product development for Gaspari Nutrition, says is going through a transition. As such, he decided to change the way Gaspari goes about staying in the game.
“We understand there’s more going on in the gym now,” says Pierce, naming MMA, CrossFit and P90X as influencers. “People want to do more than pick up weights. There’s a shift to functional athletics because the average consumer doesn’t want to be big and bulky. So we’ve decided to adapt to this change and offer more performance-based products.”
This decision led to the launch of a bunch of new Gaspari products so far in 2012, with more on the way. One of the first was Vasotropin, which increases blood volume by delivering a bovine-derived peptide fraction (NOSPEP, a unique nitric-oxide-synthase-activating bioactive peptide fraction) combined with a powerful herbal extract that delivers natural nitrates and a potent stilbene to assist with nutrient partitioning. This formula also offers a lactate donor and a powerful glycerophosphate to support endurance and increased blood flow. Pierce suggests taking Vasotropin with your preworkout meal to increase carb uptake into your muscles.
With the launch of the MyoFusion Probiotic Series, Pierce says Gaspari became the first mainstream company to put probiotics in protein powder. “Most probiotics don’t have good survivability on the shelf,” he explains, “but this strain is shelf-stable and survives stomach acids to deliver beneficial bacteria to your digestive system.” The six-stage protein blend includes whey protein concentrate, brown rice protein concentrate, whey protein isolate, casein milk protein isolate, egg albumin and fast-acting whey protein hydrolysate — for 24 grams of muscle-building protein in each serving. This gluten-free and aspartame-free formula has more than 9 grams of essential amino acids to support recovery and a patented GanedenBC30 (Bacillus coagulans GBI-30, 6086) probiotic to support immune and digestive health.
Next up was Anatropin, which boosts testosterone and controls estrogen at the same time. “This plant-based T-booster will help you feel spry and 18 again,” Pierce says. Detonate, Gaspari’s new thermogenic fat burner, which contains the plant extract Dendrobium nobile, quickly followed. “It crushes appetite, and the results are fast,” says Pierce, who adds that most people will just need one cap a day, in the morning.
AminoLast emerged next. It’s a new branched-chain-amino-acid product that features AmmoClear technology to address increased ammonia from working out. Active athletes who aren’t getting all their servings of fruits and veggies will like iGreens. This high-fiber formula contains spirulina (an algae-based superfood), mangosteen (which helps alleviate joint issues) and Lonza’s ResistAid (the soluble fiber arabinogalactan to boost immune response), plus antioxidants and general nutrients.
While Pierce can’t reveal too much as of press time, the next product to hit store shelves will be GlycoFuse — which contains a new GRAS-approved carbohydrate source.
If that sounds like a suite of products perfectly geared to address an athlete’s every need, well, it is. But how does Gaspari get the inside scoop on what its customers are looking for? “Having someone in research and development who is an athlete helps,” says Pierce, who is competitive in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, wryly.
